Recreating the Derby Hat Restaurant for "Curse of the Phantom Shadow" matte painting.

Recreating the Derby Hat Restaurant for "Curse of the Phantom Shadow" matte painting. I'm glad it came out looking half way decent.
Although i was not able to get it to look photo real, I did manage to get a very nice stylized near photo real look.
Figuring out the derby was interesting.

i originally tried to lathe it
but then realized the brim wasn't even connected to the building
and when i got some real reference i saw it was just a dome and a cylinder, the main building 😊
the rim is just a concrete structure going half around too
so that bit helped me a lot to figure out how to construct it

There was some other things going on as well, i used some buildings to block out the area, and they were not good enough. Once i found the apartment building things started look a bit more like downtown.

Lighting was flat for about the first 1/5 of the set up, and then i figured i wanted a back lit moon kind of situation and it created that nice rim light on the dome. Lighting is what makes an image look good. I pay a lot of attention to how light falls in my different artworks.

Scale is really important, getting everything to be the right scale is really important with any set piece. You have to make sure the textures are correct because an improperly scaled texture can throw off the scale of the whole set.
