I worked at Flash film works on the project and came on board as a Composite artist even though at the time my main skillset was 3d generalist and modeler. As it turns out i would wind up using all these skills to create the beautiful interactive screen motion graphics for the mars ship interiors.

Mostly i had to place the screens, matte the hands, and color correct everything and add post effects. It was my first time using Black magics compositing program called fusion although it was made by a different company back then. I had told them i knew how to use After effects, and they were like hit the road jack, so i asked them what do you use. They said fusion, and i said - well i'll tell you what - i'll work for %50 off until you feel i can do the shots using your software. My first week i completed 5 shots and after 2 weeks they put me to the full wage. Sometimes you gotta NEGOTIATE to get into the door. It was my first film job.

Some of the elements i created by using lightwave 3d to animate clouds, arrows, and various dials. For others i used photoshop to stitch images of mars together. I even wrote a fake narrative in one image because it shrank down to be too small to read. Something about eating the bugs from the film.

The most difficult shot was the last shot which was a wire removal shot. At first nothing worked, and roto of the wire left a ghostly shimmer rippling through the shot. It needed another solution. Ken strannhan came up with the idea of replacing the bg with a clean plate constructed from several shots of clean and then tracked into place and then rotoscoping the body. This worked perfectly and was the correct way to approach the shot. Several other workers were adamant that rotoscoping from the start was the key to getting it done, but I stood my ground and said another way needed to be done - and by working with ken(an industry vet) we figured it out.

Several animations for the motion graphics were created using lightwave 3d and were actually 3d visuals turned into a movie that ran on a loop. The cloud arrow animation took me 1/2 a day to put together and used some interesting spline techniques to get the arrows to follow a line. I think the version of lightwave at the time was 6 or 7 a far cry from what we have today, but i was pretty good with it at the time regardless.

My work on Red Planet - I did all of these screen visuals using fusion. While i didn't design the UI, I did create some of the animated windows. I also animated all the pieces in the shots.

My work on Red Planet - This was the hardest shot of the bunch. Instead of doing roto of the wires holding up the actors, I created a clean plate, and tracked it in and rotoed the actors out. THis worked while rotoing the wires left a ghostly ripple.
