These shots were created in 2000 using lightwave 7 or 8 i think at netter digital post production house known for babylon 5.

I used to live and work in NYC doing a lot of odds and ends as i struggled to create a demo reel. One of the things i created was an animated mecha on an asteroid. It was one of the items in my demo reel. I showed it to 29 vendors at siggraph in 2000 in los angeles. No one returned my calls. As almost a lark, I recalled there was one more post house i hadn't seen at siggraph. I Looked up where it was, head over there on my last day in los angeles and talked to a receptionist at Netter digital home of babylon 5. I told the receptionist i was leaving and that i'd like to talk to someone about being potentially hired. She fast tracked me before 2 others waiting in the hall and i showed them my reel with the mecha on it and they loved it. They had just finished a mecha short for a video game and loved anything mecha !! So, i got hired, and the show i worked on was called MAX STEEL.

As it turns out max steel would get a second life years later as a reboot series with updated cg graphics.
At the time netter digital had a full sized motion capture studio and the original max steel was entirely motion captured. This allowed them to pump out 13 episodes in under a year with only 3 six man teams (maybe eight i can't recall anymore).
I worked on 3 of the episodes. 1, 9 and still looking for which other i can't recall.

My job initially since i was on board at the very beginning and they were crewing up - my jack of all trades abilities got me work as a modeler for the first few months building sets and props. After that it was as a layout artist putting motion captured characters into sets with props and vehicles and other characters and making all that interact.
I also did any visual effects like particle sparks and smoke.

I did build the entire mount corinth evil guys lair, and several props including a cable gun.
I believe at the time we were using dec alpha workstation class computers with dual cpu's which at the time was almost unheard of.
We also had these quad core computers which were super speedy and nice to work on - i modeled the set on one of those and because it had extra ram and 4 cores i was able to finish the model in one day which would have taken me several on the dec alpha a much slower machine at the time. The quad core systems cost netter 20k each and part of why they went bankrupt was because they couldn't afford to pay the people they bought the computers from, and among other things like not enough projects and mismanagement of max steel.
Netter was a great post house to work, and the people there were all exceptional artists and co workers.

Max steel episode 9 was also my star wars, i got to fly max around in one of his vehicles that you could buy as a toy. Those shots still hold up today and show off some of my ability to put these things together. Its not so easy to make some anonymous storyboard actually work and feel exciting and fun.
